Nike Baby Groot and Deadpool shirt It was during a Mandarin class that I heard an interesting philosophy: if you ask for the pleasure of someone's company, it's customary for you to cover their end of the end for that activity. The same thing for a date, if I asked you out, then I will pay. Generally speaking, I will always let a word slide to the waiter/waitress while my date is a way to confirm it's a single bill. If both can pay, I think it’s reasonable to expect both to pay their own way. In the past, I imagine part of the reason men were expected to pay is that women largely couldn’t work or if they did work they were in lesser paid jobs. I do think if one person earns exponentially more than the other they should foot the bill, especially if the date venue was their choice. Ultimately it’s all about establishing what both parties expect of a date upfront so no one is left feeling obligated to pay for something they weren’t expecting
